Support the Park

Red Mountain Park will provide the city and region with new opportunity for countless years to come, as the park development will unfold in phases.  The first phase is upon us and will require a great philanthropic effort from Birmingham citizens and the entire region.

This phase includes a system of trails that will take visitors the entire way around the mountain.  The progress of this first phase will be accelerated through your future donation to Red Mountain Park.

Red Mountain Park will soon be asking for your willingness to contribute…

The development of Red Mountain Park marks a turning point as a new chapter in the development of the city of Birmingham.  This new page has existed from the very beginning of Birmingham’s story, just waiting for its citizens to come along and finally turn the page.  In fact, park plans for Red Mountain have existed for more than 80 years:

“Save for public enjoyment the expansive, impressive and varied outlook from the ridge.” –A Park Plan for Birmingham, written by the Olmsted Brothers in 1924

Red Mountain Park will restore the place that was once the heartbeat of the city into something beautiful that everyone can feel proud of:

“I rode along the top of Red Mountain and looked over that beautiful valley where Birmingham lies today. It was one vast garden as far as the eye could reach…” John T. Milner, Chief Engineer, Alabama State Railroad, 1851

To step on park property and hear about the work that took place there provides a clear understanding as to why Red Mountain was once a shrine for the city of Birmingham.  It sustained, restored and protected year after year:

“…the shrine from which a war-ruined people were to draw new faith and hope and strength…” Mary Gordon Duffee, The Weekly Iron Age, December 17, 1885
