Where is Red Mountain Park located?
Red Mountain Park is located in the southwest corner of the City of Birmingham. The park is situated on 1,108 acres, extending approximately 4.5 miles east-to-west along Red Mountain.

What types of facilities and attractions will Red Mountain Park offer?
From day one, the centerpieces of Red Mountain Park have been its extensive, interconnected trail system, its juxtaposition of natural features with historic mining structures and its interpretive exhibits highlighting the mining history of Red Mountain and Birmingham. In addition to general recreational uses, the park will provide a unique venue for corporate meetings, family and community celebrations and other events. Throughout its development, Red Mountain Park will incorporate new ideas and opportunities for added facilities and attractions.

When will the park be open for public use?
Red Mountain Park is being developed in phases, and the park will open in sections as they become ready for public use. In the park’s first phase of opening, projected for the spring of 2011, visitors will have access to a scenic walking trail that runs in a 10-mile loop around the base of Red Mountain. In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to experience the potential of Red Mountain Park by attending one or more of the schedule public tours on the site.
Who is responsible for oversight and park operation?
Oversight of the park is the responsibility of the Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area Commission. Day-to-day administration, operation and maintenance, of Red Mountain Park are carried out by the Executive Director and Park Staff.
Is Red Mountain Park a state park?
No. Red Mountain Park is an urban park under development by a private, nonprofit entity, and is not under state administration.
How is Red Mountain Park being funded?
Funding for the park has come from numerous private and public sources. U.S. Steel, through its subsidiary, USS Realty, sold the park site to the Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area Commission at a greatly discounted price, and also made a $1 million cash donation. The Jefferson County Commission donated $4 million to the park. The Hugh Kaul Foundation made a gift of $100,000 to provide initial operating funds for the park. The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has provided a conduit for donations from individual supporters, as well as planning and startup grants.
The Red Mountain Park staff will continue to seek major funding from foundations, corporations and other private donors, and to solicit smaller contributions from individual supporters in the general public. When the park is opened to the public, additional funding to sustain and expand its facilities and attractions will be generated by admission fees.
