National Trails Day Event

Red Mountain Park is excited to announce that in partnership with the American Hiking Society, we will host National Trails Day!  Please join us June 2, 2012 from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. here at the Park.  We will have a fun hike, refreshments, lots of give-a-ways and a special Trail dedication.  Our Zip Line will also be open to all of our guests.  This event is sure to be fun…

Red Ore Zip Tour Directions

April 27, 2012

Directions to our office from I-65 (park hikes begin in the adjoining cul-de-sac):  Take Lakeshore Parkway headed west (toward Bessemer) for aproximately 3 miles, turn right onto Frankfurt Drive and then right onto Lyon Lane.  Our address is 277 Lyon Lane.

To get to the Red Ore Zip Tour:  Please follow the Eureka Mines Trail (Signage is available)

Annual Volunteer Vacation

Red Mountain Park is excited to welcome ten volunteers from around the country to the second annual Volunteer Vacation.  The volunteers will work with the park’s staff from Sunday, March 18-Friday, March 23 to make improvements to the Eastern Trails System.  Many of Birmingham’s local restaurants and top tourism spots have signed on to entertain the visitors during their down time.

Birmingham Botanical Garden Hikers

Today we were privileged to have hikers from the Birmingham Botanical Gardens explore mines 13 and 14.  Thank you to all who came out to enjoy both the history and beauty Red Mountain Park has to offer!

Meet Our Environmental Science Intern, Reed

Meet Reed Matte, Red Mountain Park’s science intern.  Reed is a junior at the UAB majoring in Anthropology and getting a minor in Environmental Studies.  Here at the park, Reed studies the affects the mining had on the mountain itself and how nature has recovered since that time.  He is studying the state tree of Alabama, the Longleaf Pine.  This tree was actually thought to be extinct; however Reed discovered…

Meet our new Administrative Assistant, Cynthia Tarver

Cynthia has previous experience with the park.  As a child, she grew up in the Wenonah community.  Cynthia and her friends often visited the area where the park is being built.  They enjoyed playing in the old mine ruins and picking plums.  Cynthia is honored to be a part of this project with Red Mountain Park, and is excited to be “reuniting with her past to build a wonderful future”.…

My Rail-Trail Champion Award

October 4, 2011

I am delighted to report that I have just returned from receiving my Doppelt Family Rail-Trail Champion Award from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.

The 24 other national recipients and I were awarded at Kaiser Permanente’s state-of-the-art Center for Total Health in Washington, D.C. on October 1.  We received a commemorative silver-plated railroad spike and, most importantly, a pass-through grant to the trail or trail organization of our choice.…

Park Ranger McFerrin to Speak at L&N Railroad Convention

We are excited to have our Park Ranger, Eric McFerrin, speaking at the L&N Railroad convention in Harlan, Kentucky this week.

According to Ranger McFerrin, the L&N Railroad was predominantly the main railroad carrying red ore early on.  He says industry in Birmingham and the railroad are inseparably intertwined.

Founded in 1850, this railroad system ultimately spanned 6000 miles and served 13 states.  The L&N…
