Red Mountain Park would like to say a special “thank you” to Birmingham Fire and Rescue! These men put on a Ropes Rescue Training session at the Park today. Your service to the community does not go unnoticed, and is greatly appreciated. We admire their professionalism and dedication to training!!
National Trails Day Event
May 14, 2012Red Mountain Park is excited to announce that in partnership with the American Hiking Society, we will host National Trails Day! Please join us June 2, 2012 from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. here at the Park. We will have a fun hike, refreshments, lots of give-a-ways and a special Trail dedication. Red Ore Zip Tour Directions
April 27, 2012Directions to our office from I-65 (park hikes begin in the adjoining cul-de-sac): Take Lakeshore Parkway headed west (toward Bessemer) for aproximately 3 miles, turn right onto Frankfurt Drive and then right onto Lyon Lane. Our address is 277 Lyon Lane.

Annual Volunteer Vacation
March 16, 2012Red Mountain Park is excited to welcome ten volunteers from around the country to the second annual Volunteer Vacation. The volunteers will work with the park’s staff from Sunday, March 18-Friday, March 23 to make improvements to the Eastern Trails System. Many of Birmingham’s local restaurants and top tourism spots have signed on to entertain the visitors during their down time.

Meet Our Environmental Science Intern, Reed
February 17, 2012Meet Reed Matte, Red Mountain Park’s science intern. Reed is a junior at the UAB majoring in Anthropology and getting a minor in Environmental Studies. Here at the park, Reed studies the affects the mining had on the mountain itself and how nature has recovered since that time. He is studying the state tree of Alabama, the Longleaf Pine. Meet our new Administrative Assistant, Cynthia Tarver
January 27, 2012Cynthia has previous experience with the park. As a child, she grew up in the Wenonah community. Cynthia and her friends often visited the area where the park is being built. They enjoyed playing in the old mine ruins and picking plums. My Rail-Trail Champion Award
October 4, 2011I am delighted to report that I have just returned from receiving my Doppelt Family Rail-Trail Champion Award from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy.
The 24 other national recipients and I were awarded at Kaiser Permanente’s state-of-the-art Center for Total Health in Washington, D.C. on October 1. We received a commemorative silver-plated railroad spike and, most importantly, a pass-through grant to the trail or trail organization of our choice.…
Park Ranger McFerrin to Speak at L&N Railroad Convention
September 20, 2011We are excited to have our Park Ranger, Eric McFerrin, speaking at the L&N Railroad convention in Harlan, Kentucky this week.
According to Ranger McFerrin, the L&N Railroad was predominantly the main railroad carrying red ore early on. He says industry in Birmingham and the railroad are inseparably intertwined.
