Birmingham was founded in 1871, and much of the city’s success and growth during its first century of existence can be attributed to the mining of iron ore on Red Mountain—and to the miners and other workers who performed the back-breaking labor on which the city rose to prominence. A team of Red Mountain Park Staff, UAB Faculty Members, and local photographer, Melissa Springer are getting out into the community to capture the stories that simply cannot be left untold.
