This year’s Commission Planning Retreat focused entirely on completing the tasks that will open the park. As they continue to move towards the finish line, they took a quick look at just a few of their accomplishments thus far:
2008:
- Hired Executive Director
- First public tours of Red Mountain Park are held; hundreds attend each event
- U.S. Steel donates $1 million to Red Mountain Park
- City of Birmingham donates additional land to Red Mountain Park
- Park Ranger hired
2009:
- Website Launches
- Hired Projects Coordinator
- Hired Director of Development
- USS and City of Birmingham donate additional land; USS donations include the historic Mt.Olive and Oxmoor cemeteries, the final resting place for hundreds of miners/US Steel workers and their families
- Oral Histories Begin
- Park website launched
- New trails under construction
2010:
- Hired Park Maintenance Staff
- Red Mountain Park Fund & Fund Board Formed
- Park Rules & Regulations adopted and in effect
- New trails constructed bringing total to 10+miles
- Hold first National Trails Day
- Civil engineer hired; engineering/permitting work begins
- Park Oral History Gallery Opening
- RMP selected for American Hiking Society’s Volunteer Vacation
- Archaeology begins at Redding and Smyth
- Proclamation- RMP Miner’s Day Declared
2011:
- PR Efforts expand
- Print, TV and Radio spots follow
- Mayor Bell records Oral History and RMP promo
