Director of Park Programs

Role and Responsibilities

Plans, directs, coordinates, establishes, participates in, organizes, and oversees all programs and activities of the Park Programs Department. Provides and aids the Executive Director in formulating and administering organizational policies. Provides support to all assigned areas; coordinates activities with other departments and outside agencies; performs other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Director of Park Programs oversees, directs, and participates in all activities of the Park Programs Department, including short and long-term planning, development and administration of departmental policies, procedures, and services. This class provides assistance, collaborates with, and acts as a liaison to the Public in a variety of administrative and analytical capacities. The incumbent is expected to be knowledgeable regarding applicable laws, codes, and standards regulating department activities.

Supervision Received/Exercised

Policy direction is provided by the Park Commission and administrative direction is provided by the Executive Director. The Director Park Programs provides direct and indirect supervision of technical and professional staff and provides administrative oversight of all departmental functions.

  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates all department activities
  • Develops, reviews, updates, and implements various mandates, programs, and other Park policies
  • Prepares and administers departmental operating budget, including review generation and expenditures controls
  • Provides recommendations to the Executive Director regarding departmental activities
  • Prepares and reviews agenda items, resolutions, and ordinances
  • Represents Red Mountain Park and serves as liaison to committees, boards, commissions, and other governmental agencies
  • Formulates, implements, and evaluates departmental operating policies and procedures
  • Oversees and prepares a variety of reports and studies
  • Plans, directs, monitors, and evaluates recreation services operations, facilities, programs, objectives, service levels, community needs and revenue generation
  • Coordinates recreation functions and programs with the activities of other Park departments
  • Meets with individuals and community organizations concerning the Park Programs department and functions
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints regarding departmental functions
  • Selects, supervises, trains, motivates, mentors and evaluates staff

Adventure Guides

 

Role and Responsibilities

 

Adventure Guides have a tremendous responsibility on their shoulders to ensure that all guests have an incredible and safe experience.  Adventure Guides provide orientation for guests and guide them through various zip line tours and treetop canopy adventures while providing a safe, enjoyable and engaging experience.

 

  • Monitor guests, equipment and course
  • Ability to comply with Park safety rules and policies
  • Ability to operate professionally at all times
  • Work to ensure that the Adventure Area is clean at all times
  • Meet and greet Red Mountain Park guests
  • Maintain a good sense of humor and cooperative attitude in dealing with all guests
  • Treat guests with respect, so they will know they are valued and cared for
  • Instruct guests in gearing-up, safety orientation and ground school
  • Maintain proficiency with guiding participants safely through every element of the Adventure Area
  • Keep informed on Park attractions, events and history
  • Responsible for personal safety and safety of others
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Flexible work schedule to include weekends, nights and holidays
  • Minimum Education: high school diploma/GED
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, self-motivated, strong communication skills
  • Must be a team player with a “Can-Do” attitude, and willing to assist in all areas of Park operations
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced outdoor environment in various weather and temperature scenarios
  • Demonstrate responsible, reliable, punctual and commitment to job
  • Excited about engaging people and sharing the wonder of Red Mountain Park
  • Family friendly, pleasant and courteous in all interactions with Park guests
  • Must be punctual and utilize time efficiently
  • Must be comfortable talking to groups
  • Flexible schedule (regular evening, weekend and holiday work expected)
  • Must be physically fit, able to lift 50 pounds, and able to hike, climb, rappel and work at heights in excess of 50 feet above ground level
  • Must successfully complete guide training, including written and assessment tests
  • Able to make risk management decisions
  • Must complete or have a current First Aid and CPR Certificate (classes may be available for those without current certifications
