After months of park improvement-type projects, it took us a little by surprise when Troop 97’s Douglas Coghlan came to us with this eagle scout proposal but we sure are glad he did. Douglas used his creative talents and his love for film to create three informative, enjoyable videos for Red Mountain Park and we are excited to share them with you now on the web until they find a permanent home in the visitor’s center at Red Mountain Park one day. Birmingham was founded in 1871, and much of the city’s success and growth during its first century of existence can be attributed to the mining of iron ore on Red Mountain—and to the miners and other workers who performed the back-breaking labor on which the city rose to prominence.  A team of Red Mountain Park Staff, UAB Faculty Members, and local photographer, Melissa Springer are getting out into the community to capture the stories that simply cannot be left untold. Read on to learn more about the Red Mountain Park Oral History Project.

The Red Mountain Park Commission has just approved the Phase One Development plan. This will include construction of the ‘Round the Mountain Loop Trail, the Welcome Center, restoration of the Redding Hoist House and new access routes to the park from Lakeshore Parkway on the southside and Ishkooda Wenonah on the northside.
