Birmingham Boy Scouts Clean Up No.13!

An enormous thank you to the 100+ scouts and parents who joined us this weekend in a major clearing project at the No. 13 mine. Our entire staff is impressed each and every time the scouts execute a project at RMP. Photos below by Jeff Newman.

National Trails Day Hike! Saturday, June 4th 8:30

Join the Red Mountain Park Staff, Commission, & Friends of Red Mountain Park as we take a hike on the NEW Ishkooda Mines Trail, an exciting trail that features a beautiful overlook of downtown Birmingham. We will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Frankfurt Drive cul-de-sac(right by our office). Spots are limited so hold yours by emailing Katie@redmountainpark.org or by calling our office at (205) 202-6043. Hikers will have two options: the new Ishkooda Mines trail(approximately 3 hours long) and a shorter hike(approximately 90 minutes in length).

Volunteer Vacation Wrap-Up: final numbers on what was accomplished!

1. Cleared 3,340 feet on a road in the park that had been abandoned for 48 years and turned it into part of the new trail we call the Ishkooda Mines Trail that goes to the Birmingham city overlook. 2. Laid out and built 475 feet of new single track trail, which is also part of the new Ishkooda Mines Trail to the city overlook. 3. Cleared vegetation from two historic foundations that are on the park property; one associated with the compressor house that was part of the Ishkooda plant facilities for the #13 and #14 iron ore mines and the other being the foundation of the bath house for the #14 mine.

Also, during the week of work, over 3,000 linear feet of invasive privet was cleared.

A total of 3,815 feet of new trail was built.

We are pleased to be partnering again this year with Lawson State Community College to bring you the Western Quarterly Forum on Thursday, April 21st at 6:00 p.m. I’ll be covering park progress and updates and will also be asking for some specific support as we move forward.

State of the Re:Union Coming to Birmingham and Red Mountain Park

State of the Re:Union is a nationally aired radio show distributed by NPR and PRX. State of the Re:Union visits a city or town to explore what residents are doing to create community and they are coming to the Magic City on January 17th! They will include the development of Red Mountain Park in their broadcast.

Volunteer Vacation @ Red Mountain Park

Park Staff is pleased to see Red Mountain Park on the American Hiking Society’s list of Volunteer Vacations for 2011. We are looking forward to hosting folks from around the country who are going to help with a couple of park projects that will be tremendously valuable. We are also looking forward to showing them some fun in Birmingham, Alabama!

Proclamation from Mayor Bell

On Tuesday, Red Mountain Park Staff and Commission attended the City Council meeting in order to hear the Mayor’s proclamation for the men and women who worked and lived on Red Mountain–he declared August 24th, 2010 Red Mountain Park Miners’ Day. Enjoy the photographs Ranger McFerrin captured and read the proclamation from the Mayor below.

“Whereas, Red Mountain is the industrial foundation and soul of the city of Birmingham; and Whereas, During its history, Red Mountain had thousands of miners working in over 70 iron ore mines and living in local mining villages such as Redding, Smyth, Ishkooda, Wenonah, Muscoda, Sloss, Woodward and Raimund; and Whereas, For 108 years, Red Mountain miners produced over 10, 750 pounds of iron ore every minute in hundreds of miles of underground excavations; and Whereas, As the workers in the mines that supplied ‘The Arsenal of Democracy’, Red Mountain miners produced an average of 10 percent of our Nation’s iron ore, built our nation’s infrastructure, and won two world wars; and Whereas, As highly skilled laborers, Red Mountain miners of all races played a crucial role in the industrial growth, strength, and history of our city, our state, and our nation.”

If you know someone who worked on Red Mountain or lived in the surrounding mining communities, please let us know. We have had a great time getting to know all of the people who have such a strong personal tie to Red Mountain Park.

First Park Bike Tour This Sunday!

This Sunday the park will host a brand new user group as the Friends of Red Mountain Park hold the first-ever bike tour at Red Mountain Park. I hope this tour marks the beginning of a variety of groups finding use at the park. The park has the ability to serve so many: bikers, hikers, walkers, runners, equestrians, and many others. We have begun to build connections with a few different user groups in Birmingham, but I know there are many more to get to know…
