“From the Ground Up”

December 3rd, 2010

Hope you caught Christina Crowe’s article in Black & White this week.  If not, here is a glimpse of what she had to say about Red Mountain Park:

Deep within the privet and kudzu that snake through, curl around, and cover everything in their path, relics rest in the land atop Red Mountain.  This is the site of longtime mining operations that made up Birmingham’s founding industry.  Thousands of men toiled underground here, while their families went to school, worked, and lived aboveground in mining towns established by their employers.  For decades this former industrial site sat untouched, left to the wildlife that overtook it and obscured much of the physical legacy of the work that took place here.  Now as early as 2012, the city may gain its second new park in as many years with the opening of Red Mountain Park, which is being designed with the goal of bringing that history to light.

Thank you, Christina!  Have a great weekend, everyone.

First Tour: A SUCCESS

October 22nd, 2010

I would like to thank everyone who came out to the park on Sunday for the first tour of the fall series.  We had beautiful weather and a good time like always.  Also a special thanks to the Friends of Red Mountain Park, who sponsor these tours and make them so much fun.  www.friendsofredmountainpark.org

Questions about the next tour?  Email me at contact@redmountainpark.org.

the ghost of the No.13 mine…

Though it’s been a hundred years since he worked, he still hangs around the park looking to mine ore.  Happy Halloween from Red Mountain Park.

week in review

October 1st, 2010

Just a few of the high points from our week:

1.  Great new article about the park’s oral history project.  Definitely check it out:http://www.uab.edu/uabmagazine/2010/october/redmountainpark  And this one mentions the park in the listing at the end(we like): http://www.readymade.com/magazine/article/place_setting

2.  Our Friends are doing so much.  The Friends of Red Mountain Park have another trail work day tomorrow morning, are gearing up for the first park tour of the Fall, and are going to be taking on several more park projects(like work on an old mining bridge at the No.13 mine).  How do the Friends do it all?  They remain passionate about building this park, and it is an energy that makes our entire staff feel great.

3. American Hiking Society Volunteer Vacation application.  If we are selected, we will be privileged to host folks from around the country to build trail at Red Mountain Park.  We have ideas upon ideas about the fun we will have with them all week during Spring Break 2011.

4.  And what about on the property?  This week there were tires.  Lots of tires:
